Music Pick of the Week - Two Door Cinema Club - Tourist History

I discovered these guys almost a year ago. I got the album, but never listened to it until about a few months back. Late is always better than never, and for Two Door Cinema Club's debut album, Tourist History is better than most. TDCC has an upbeat contemporary pop sound that would fit perfectly in most car commercials. Even if that doesn't make sense to you , it is a great album to listen to while driving at night. While this kind of pop isn't my favorite genre, this album is highly addicting and I can't get enough.

The main band consists of a three young guitarists. The guitar sound is the most prevalent throughout the entirety of the album. Almost every song on the album maintains a fast paced tempo. These guys really did a fine job of capturing that whole disco/pop/dance/euro sound. Yes, I did just make that up. While some might say that the entire album sounds like one song, that is simply not true.  In fact many of the songs have memorable choruses and melodies. Though the album does have a focused collective sound, there is enough variation and innovation to keep you interested until the end.

In terms of lyrical style, the majority of the songs are a about my favorite theme; guy is in love with stupid girl, and guy tries to explain why he is right and she is stupid. While the stories within each song are rather general, TDCC does manage to capture some issues that many people can relate to. The issues of relationships that are portrayed might be general in some cases, but the settings are specific enough to make the lyrics meaningful and memorable.

One of my only complaints with the band is that they sometimes sing too fast and I can't understand what they are saying. That never stops me from singing along anyway.  Tracks you should check out are Undercover Martyn, I Can Talk, and What You Know. My favorite song on the album is a tie between the last two.   And for those of you out there playing NBA 2K 11 you may recognize I Can Talk from the soundtrack.  I also posted the official music video for that one below.

Please check out some of the tracks below, and if you find it as addicting as I do please buy their album. As soon as these guys go back on tour in the states I will be ready to buy some tickets.  Two Door Cinema Club provides a refreshing take on indie pop that will be sure to put you in a good mood so check it out.
